Hot Press Dial Pressure Calculator

Find the dial (gauge) pressure to set on a hot press from ply size, specific pressure, ram diameter and number of rams. Gets a printable pressure chart in kg/cm² and MPa, with size chart and capacity.

Formula

Dial pressure (kg/cm²) = Ply area (cm²) × Specific pressure (kg/cm²) ÷ Total ram area (cm²) 1 ram area = 3.14 × d² ÷ 4; Total ram area = 1 ram area × Number of rams; Diameter = Circumference ÷ 3.14 MPa = kg/cm² ÷ 10.197; Max capacity (ton) = Max working pressure × Ram area ÷ 1000

Technical notes

  • Enter the ram diameter from a caliper, or wrap a tape round the ram to get the circumference.
  • The chart shows dial pressure for every plywood size at a range of specific pressures. Red cells are above the maximum working pressure of the press.
  • Dial values are rounded to the nearest 5, 1 or 0.1 (your choice). Always confirm with the press manufacturer before changing machine settings.
